Accommodation
 

ETC Accommodation Service
ETC will arrange Homestay accommodation for you.  Click here to fill out a Homestay Application Form (an accommodation booking fee of NZ$150 applies for this service).

Homestay
This is your opportunity to live and speak English in a New Zealand home.  You will have your own room with a study desk.  Breakfast, lunch and evening meals from Monday to Friday and during the weekends are included in the fees. Fees in Palmerston North are NZ$210 per week.  Fees in Wellington are from NZ$210 to $235 per week.

ETC suggestion: This is the best type of accommodation for international students coming to New Zealand for the first time.You will be part of a family. They will look after you, provide meals and help you to practice your English. Also teach you New Zealand customs and laws ready for if you want to go flatting.

Other types of Accommodation

Flatting
This is one of the most economical ways of living in New Zealand.  It is also the most common form of accommodation for students and other young adults.  Usually one person rents a house, then they rent out the extra bedrooms. Fees range from $60 to $150 per week.  Additional costs are power, food, and telephone.  Flatting in Palmerston North is less expensive than in Wellington.  Flatting arrangements can only be made after you have arrived in New Zealand.
ETC suggestion: Suitable for an international student who would like to live in New Zealand for some length of time and who would like to make friends with other students. The international student will need to be independent, able to do basic cooking, willing to do own washing and cleaning.

Motel
Motel accommodation in New Zealand can be an economical way of living, it is less expensive than hotels.  Motels are like a small home, they usually include kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.  Fees range from $200 to over $500 per week.  Cost for food is extra.
ETC suggestion: Good quality accommodation, suitable for a short stay student, (one or two weeks) as it can become expensive. Frequently used by people travelling to other cities and to holiday resorts.

Bed and Breakfast
Usually in a large house which has been converted into accommodation for several people.  Fees about $300 per week
ETC suggestion: Good for people wanting to travel around New Zealand and like to stay in a family home. Usually in interesting older homes.

Hostel / Student Apartments / Boarding
You will get your own room, and share your meals with others.  Fees range from $165 to $240 per week.  Two or three meals per day are cooked for you.  This is included in the fees.
ETC suggestion: Good for students who like to be independent. Able to do their own cooking and washing

Backpacker
Low-cost accommodation, usually in a large converted house.  Ideal accommodation for individuals and small groups of people wanting to travel around New Zealand.  Fees $15 to $25 per night.  Bed and cooking facilities provided.

ETC suggestion: Not suitable as long stay accommodation. Good for holidays and traveling around New Zealand
